Development

The Office of University Development at Washington and Lee exists to help meet the University’s highest priorities and special opportunities and to build its financial strength by attracting philanthropic support for the University’s mission.  In order to achieve this purpose, the office must work closely with numerous partners and constituencies and be adequately staffed with qualified administrative and support personnel who will do the following:

  • Identify individuals, corporations, and foundations that are likely sources of philanthropic support;
  • Seek and maintain information on the financial capabilities and philanthropic interests of past and prospective donors;
  • Design programs and develop strategies that will foster greater involvement and closer connections to the life of the University;
  • Communicate effectively the University’s financial needs, priorities, and strategic initiatives as determined by the faculty, academic leadership, the President, and the Board of Trustees;
  • Obtain gifts for each year’s operating budget, for approved additions to and improvements of the physical plant, and for the endowment;
  • Provide for future endowment growth through a strong program of planned giving that includes, but is not limited to, income-retained gifts, charitable income trusts, life insurance, and bequests;
  • Record, acknowledge, and maintain accurate historical records of all gifts;
  • Report regularly to donors on the use and , if endowment, the growth of their gifts;
  • And foster good will among all of the University’s constituencies.

          Finally, the development staff must carry out its mission in a professional manner, incorporating and reflecting high ethical standards and the most precious traditions of Washington and Lee.  These traditions include a firm commitment to personal honor and integrity, to the importance of individuals, to forthright and personalized manner of dealing with others, and to volunteerism as a means of serving society and achieving worthy goals.
