Pan-Asian railway set in train

Long held plans of establishing a Trans-Asian railway are showing more signs of becoming a reality.  Trial runs have been undertaken and both officials and shippers are showing a renewed interest in the program.  If the Trans-Asian railway is to come to fruition, it will require the corporation of 27 governments.  The process and planning is being supervised by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).  (January 2005)

Three out of four colleges and universities target endowment spending at about five percent of a three-year rolling average of the total endowment.  With the success of the market in the 1990s, many colleges saw their endowment values soar, and many colleges became more dependent on endowment spending.  Due to the more recent market volatility, many universities are reevaluating their endowment-spending policies.  (2005)

The article explores the unintended consequences of discounting tuition—making the cost to students less than the actual costs incurred by colleges and universities to educate them.  As colleges continue to employ tuition-discounting, the gap in average tuition between public and private colleges has increased dramatically.  As a result, the proportion of low-and middle-income students attending private colleges has declined several percentage points.   (May 2003)
