Dear Visitor:
As chairman of the Commission on the 250th Observance, it is my pleasure to welcome you on behalf of the Commission to Washington and Lee University's 250th Observance home page. Thank you for visiting.
The year 1999 will mark the 250th anniversary of Washington and Lee's founding in 1749. Throughout the academic year of 1998-99, W&L will celebrate this anniversary beginning with a special Opening Convocation, proceeding to an enhanced Homecoming, Founder's Day, and Reunion Weekend, and ending with the Law and Undergraduate Commencements. The year long celebration will include a number of other special events activities, and lectures, two historical art exhibitions, the rededication of Lee Chapel, and special alumni chapter events. Washington and Lee hopes to include every member of the W&L community in the celebration to appropriately celebrate and honor this significant milestone in the University's life and growth.
One goal of this homepage is to inform the W&L public, as well as the general public, of 250th events and activities. The other goal of this page is to connect the public to W&L history and to create excitement about the celebration through a special interactive section. In "W&L into the 21st Century," visitors will find electronic postcards to send to friends, a W&L slide show, a W&L history quiz, an on-line guest book, and other exciting features--all of which we plan to update and change regularly.
Please stop by this site often to find out the latest in 250th planning and news and to view the newest additions to our interactive section. Also, please feel free to send your comments about this page to Neil Penick, the Director of the 250th Observance, at npenick@wlu.edu.
Thanks again for visiting.
