Derek Bok
Derek Bok, president of Harvard University from
1971 to 1991, will deliver the 1999 Founders' Day
address. Bok currently serves as the 300th
Anniversary Professor at Harvard. Professor Bok
has also been a lawyer, professor of law and dean of
the Harvard Law School. He is the author of many
works, including three books on higher education:
Beyond the Ivory Tower, Higher Learning and
Universities and the Future of America. His current
research interests include the state of higher
education and the adequacy of government in the
United States in coping with the nation's domestic problems. Professor Bok
received his B.A. from Stanford University in 1951, his J.D. from
Harvard in 1954 and his M.A. from George Washington University in
1958. He studied in Paris as a Fulbright Scholar during the 1954-55
academic year.
