With the 1998-99 academic year set aside as the year of celebration for Washington and Lee's 250th anniversary, the Commission on the 250th Observance has been charged with overseeing the myriad activities and events planned for the celebration. The Commission--- a group of 41 trustees, emeritus trustees, members of the law council and alumni board, friends, parents, and alumni--- was formed by President Elrod and had its first meeting in the spring of 1997.

A successful businessman and lawyer, Ballengee has been active in cultural and civic organizations in his hometown of Philadelphia. He now serves as Counsel at the firm Morgan, Lewis & Bockius in Philadelphia.
